In response to significant crashes during the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, organizers have implemented safety enhancements at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, specifically targeting Turns 6 and 7. The modifications aim to improve driver safety and prevent future incidents.

During the 2024 race, Mercedes driver George Russell experienced a heavy crash at Turn 6 after being caught off guard by Fernando Alonso’s early braking. Additionally, Williams’ Alex Albon suffered a substantial accident during the first free practice session at the same location. These incidents raised concerns about the safety of the re-profiled and faster Turns 6 and 7.

To address these concerns, the FIA and local organizers have made several changes:

  • Barrier Adjustment: The barrier on the left side of Turn 6 has been repositioned and angled differently to reduce the risk of cars bouncing back onto the track after a collision.
  • Kerb Modification: The existing kerbs at the exit of Turn 6 through the entry and apex of Turn 7 have been replaced with a single specification of negative kerb, which sits lower than the track surface. This design aims to prevent cars from becoming unsettled and unstable.
  • Gravel Trap Extension: The gravel trap has been extended to the edge of the new kerbs to provide additional run-off area for errant vehicles.

An FIA spokesperson confirmed these updates, stating, “Following a review of last year’s event at Albert Park, several changes to Turn 6 and Turn 7 have been approved in collaboration with the local ASN and the grand prix organizers.”

These proactive measures reflect the commitment of the FIA and race organizers to continually assess and enhance circuit safety, ensuring a safer environment for drivers in future events.
